About the Center for Safe Schools Resources

The Center for Safe Schools functions as a clearinghouse for information related to school safety, violence prevention and positive outcomes for students, teachers and communities. The Center fulfills this function through a Resource Lending Library, Development of Publications, and Resource Dissemination.

Resource Clearinghouse

The Center for Safe Schools maintains a library with over 4,000 resources available for loan to schools and the public. Resources include nearly 400 videotapes, over 1,100 books, and 174 curricula. Other examples of resources in the lending library include research journals, newsletters, and other print materials.

More than 1,000 of the library’s resources specifically address violence prevention and school safety. Other resources in the lending library address topics which also impact the safety, education and success of children, families and their communities, including such topics as literacy, poverty, migrant education, dropout prevention, mentoring, preventing teen pregnancy, preventing substance abuse or helping students with substance abuse problems, community collaborations, technology in the schools, education reform ideas, school-to-work, and many more. Resource materials reflect different cultures and ethnic groups, including some Spanish language materials. The resources are suited for various ages, grades and reading levels.

Improving School Violence Prevention Programs through Meaningful Evaluation

U.S. Department of Agriculture Resources for School Food Services Security

On September 20, 2005, the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a training session on biosecurity awareness in Washington, DC. The training was based upon vulnerability assessments USDA conducted on school central kitchens, warehouses, food banks, and transportation. From this vulnerability assessment, USDA developed a training video and a 40-page document- A Biosecurity Checklist for School Foodservice Programs. USDA has also developed an emergency response food guide for schools titled, Emergency Readiness Plan: A Guide for the School Foodservice Operation.

Emergency Response and Crisis Management (ERCM) Webcast

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS) hosted an Emergency Response and Crisis Management (ERCM) Webcast on June 28, 2005. The Webcast featured an overview of the four phases of crisis planning (Mitigation/Prevention, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery) and the roles that personnel from school districts, schools and other public agencies play in developing, implementing, evaluating, and sustaining ERCM plans. A copy of the Webcast will be maintained at www.KidzOnline.org/ERCM for at least one year.
