Safe Schools Initiative Grants

The Safe Schools Initiative is guided by Act 26 of 1995, as amended by Act 30 of 1997 and Act 36 of 1999, the Safe Schools Act. Since 1995, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has been awarding grants to schools and intermediate units throughout Pennsylvania to improve school safety and prevent violence. These grants are one element of Pennsylvania's efforts to support schools and communities in establishing safe and productive learning environments. Although the 2009-10 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania budget did not include funds for Safe Schools Initiative grants, future grant opportunities may be available.

If you have additional questions about technical assistance, training and resources still available through the Safe Schools Initiative, please contact the Center for Safe Schools at 717-763-1661 ext. 164 or via email at safeschools@csc.csiu.org.

PA CARES Grant Funding for Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in Schools

The Center for Safe Schools and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, through a unique partnership with Highmark Healthy High 5, an initiative of the Highmark Foundation, is pleased to announce the availability of grants of up to $7500 for Pennsylvania schools to address the serious issue of bullying.

The Center for Safe Schools administers an initiative called PA CARES (Creating an Atmosphere of Respect and Environment for Success). This initiative helps schools implement the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) to address bullying and provide safe and nurturing learning environments. The Olweus program is an evidence-based intervention known to reduce bullying behaviors in schools and is one of only 11 'Blueprints for Violence Prevention' Model Programs.

The deadline for submission was November 6, 2009.
