Bullying and Suicide: What Educators Need to Know (registration required)
This online session was originally held on May 26, 2011
Presenters Dr. Sue Limber and Dr. Mary Margaret Kerr, experts in bullying and crisis prevention/response, address issues of adolescent suicide and bullying experiences. This online session was hosted by the Center for Safe Schools with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Highmark Foundation. Bullying and the Coordinated School Health Model
This online session was originally held on April 15, 2010
This session, entitled Bullying and School Health, was offered by the Center for Safe Schools through funding provided by the Highmark Foundation. The session was facilitated by Shiryl Barto of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the Windber Research Institute. Shiryl is an experienced health/wellness educator and Olweus Technical Assistance Consultant.
The session provided a basic overview of the Coordinated School Health (CSH) model posed by the Centers for Disease Control. Specifically, attention was paid to the inclusion of bullying prevention into CSH, and an example of community mobilization around school health education and services (in response to legislation) will be shared.
Participants in this session were provided the opportunity to:
- Identify eight areas critical to addressing student health and well-being,
- Understand where bullying prevention falls as part of the Coordinated School Health approach,
- Learn strategies for community involvement toward a healthy school environment.
Following a 30-minute presentation, participants met online with a Pennsylvania Olweus Technical Assistance Consultant (OTAC) to obtain general support with implementation issues related to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP).

Bullying Prevention in Urban Schools
This online session was originally held on March 18, 2010
This session, entitled Bullying Prevention in Urban Schools, was offered by the Center for Safe Schools through funding provided by the Highmark Foundation. The session was facilitated by Ericka L. Washington, an urban educator and experienced Olweus Technical Assistance Consultant.
Participants in this session were provided the opportunity to:
- learn creative, practical strategies for implementing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in urban settings
- learn strategies for supporting safe, predictable learning environments by implementing a bullying prevention framework district-wide
- be prepared to decrease fragmentation among evidence-based programs by identifying linkages across programs
Following a 30-minute presentation, participants met online with a Pennsylvania Olweus Technical Assistance Consultant (OTAC) to obtain general support with implementation issues related to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP).

Bullying and Protected Class Issues/OBPP Coaching
This online session was originally held on February 18, 2010
This session, entitled BULLYING AND PROTECTED CLASS ISSUES, was offered by the Center for Safe Schools through funding provided by the Highmark Foundation.
- Participants were introduced to the concepts of criminal and civil liability
- Participants learned the definition of protected class, as it relates to issues of race, gender, and disability-related harassment; and
- Participants were presented with a case study asking them to apply these concepts to a case study of bullying in schools
Following a 30-minute presentation, participants were provided an opportunity to meet online with a Pennsylvania Olweus Technical Assistance Consultant (OTAC) to obtain general support with implementation issues related to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP). Legal questions related to specific issues in your schools were not addressed.

PA CARES Fidelity Reports: An Introduction for Schools and Trainers
This online session was originally held on May 20, 2010
During the week of May 17-21, 2010 PA CARES schools received the results of the online survey completed by teachers in their buildings earlier this year. The results of these surveys were reported in a customized PA CARES Fidelity Report. On Thursday May 20, a live, online learning session for PA CARES and grantees was held. The session, entitled PA CARES Fidelity Reports: An Introduction for Schools and Trainers, took participant through a step-by-step process for interpreting and using the report to promote effective implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. This online session was offered by the Center for Safe Schools through funding provided by the Highmark Foundation. The session was facilitated by Stacie Molnar-Main, Olweus Technical Assistance Consultant, and Dr. Heather Cecil, PA CARES Evaluation Coordinator.
Participants in this session were provided the opportunity to:
- view a sample fidelity report
- understand how these reports were developed and what information is reported
- review strategies for using the PA CARES Fidelity Reports to support program implementation

New Bullying Prevention Legislation in Pennsylvania
This online session was originally held on November 24, 2009
On Monday, November 24, 2009 the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Center for Safe Schools offered a live, online training session for school services personnel. The session provided an overview of the new bullying prevention legislation and parameters outlining the requirements school districts must enact no later than January 1, 2009.
The new legislation: On July 4, 2008, the General Assembly of Pennsylvania amended through HB 1067 the Pennsylvania School Code of 1949. Two of the key changes were in "Article XIII-A Safe Schools" of the code. The amendment requires each school entity to adopt or amend its existing policy relating to bullying and the inclusion of non-public schools regarding the transfer of student disciplinary records.
